Cultural studies: an introduction John storey

Preliminary Definitions- What is culture?
Storey's introduction to "What is Cultural Studies?" include different perspectives from varying scholars, but they can all seem to be pointing roughly,- at one direction: Culture is "a particular way of life, whether of a people, a period or a group"(Williams) AND to study culture is chiefly "political in emphasis"(Fiske).
Why is culture 'a way of life', and how is its studies 'political'?
The modern concept of cultural studies, as defined above, was "born in a double refusal. On the one hand, it 'refused the elitism of high culture and the great tradition' and, on the other, 'it was equally opposed to the reductions of Marxism understood as a hard determinism of the economic' ". (Green)
Johnson argues "all social practices can be looked at from a cultural point of view, for the work they do, subjectively". In this context, culture defined in a narrower sense, whether high culture, or popular culture, cannot represent "culture" as a whole. Thus, cultural studies should be defined as the study of "historical forms of consciousness or subjectivity", which can be obtained through observing "the social life of subjective forms at each moment of their circulation", Rather than text. However, Frow and Morris argue that it makes sense for cultural studies to-instead of moments, "use text as its fundamental model", to "keep in equilibrium the different moments of cultural production ".
